Yuga Labs, the $4 billion company behind the NFT brand Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has reached a settlement with Thomas Lehman, a developer who collaborated with conceptual artist and internet provocateur Ryder Ripps on the controversial RR/BAYC project. The settlement states that Lehman has conceded Yuga’s ownership of the BAYC trademark and infringed on it with the RR/BAYC project. Though this is a victory for Yuga, the lawsuit against Ripps is still ongoing. Ripps created the RR/BAYC project to highlight Yuga’s alleged Nazi ties and the legal questions related to the reproducibility of NFTs. Lehman’s settlement does not impact the separate case against Ripps, as the two were filed in two different federal jurisdictions.
